Stamford AFC beat Gainsborough Trinity in the Lincolnshire Senior Cup
Stamford bounced back from their FA Cup exit to reach the quarter-finals of the Lincolnshire Senior Cup with victory at Gainsborough Trinity on Tuesday night.
The Daniels had twice trailed their Northern Premier League Premier Division hosts before battling back on both occasions to level the contest.
They then won 5-3 on penalties to earn a home tie with National League side Boston United in the last eight.
Manager Graham Drury made a number of changes to give his squad a chance to stake their claim after the defeat at Carlton Town on Saturday.
He explained: "Saturday was disappointing.
"I made the changes on Tuesday night to give minutes to players who needed them but I also told everyone that I'm not frightened of making a change this coming Saturday if they go out there and perform.
"It was an opportunity and the lads did well in the first half.
"Gainsborough had a lot of possession and they were a really good side who I was impressed with.
"We stuck at it and started the second half really brightly and perhaps should have won it in the end in normal time.
"Credit to the lads who took the penalties. They all wanted one, stood up and bagged them and it's a good tie for us against Boston in the next round."
The home side started well and Bobby Johnson fired over the bar from the edge of the area.
They then took the lead after seven minutes when a cross from Sisa Tutulwana from the right found Joe Stacey and he slotted the ball past Will Lakin.
Dylan Cogill then placed a header over the bar.
Stamford looked for a foothold in the game and Connor Bartle fired a shot from distance which was wide of the goal. He followed this effort up with another which Dylan Wharton was able to save.
The Daniels were now creating more chances and Tom Siddons had a shot that Wharton was able to push away for a corner.
Gainsborough thought they had a second when Dec Howe fired a shot past Lakin, but Luke Redfern was in the right position to head off the line.
This was a turning point as the Daniels attacked and Jack Duffy cut in from the left and fired a shot into the goal past Wharton.
The home side regained the lead five minutes before half-time when Howe picked up the ball and drove at the Daniels backline and he fired the shot into the bottom left corner of the goal.
Into the second half and Aaron Braithwaite had a shot which was beaten away by Lakin..
Stamford got then themselves level when Ollie Clark advanced and hit his shot from the edge of the area which squirmed out of the grasp of Wharton.
On the hour mark, Will Glennon hit an effort which was deflected before Stacey then had a shot which Lakin parried and the follow up went wide of the goal.
Stamford went looking for winner and, with time running out, Duffy had a shot which was blocked before substitute Lee Shaw had an effort hit the post deep into injury time.
The game was to be decided by penalty kicks and, with the Daniels going first, it was Tobias Liversedge who made no mistake with his effort,.
This followed with the next four efforts before Fraser Preston saw his spot kick hit the post.
James Blunden then converted the all-important fifth and final penalty for a 5-3 Stamford success ahead of their return to Southern League Premier Division Central action on Saturday with a trip to face third-placed Banbury.
