Stamford manager Graham Drury looks ahead to pre-season matches including games against League 1 Peterborough United and Doncaster Rovers
Stamford manager Graham Drury is looking forward to a pair of high-profile friendlies against League One opposition.
The Daniels host Peterborough United at the Zeeco Stadium tonight (Tuesday, 7.30pm) and take on Doncaster Rovers four days later on Saturday (noon).
The Peterborough game has become a regular fixture in Stamford’s pre-season schedule - Darren Ferguson's side winning last season’s meeting 5-0.
And it will be the second successive visit for League Two champions Doncaster who are managed by ex-Posh boss Grant McCann. Last year's match ended 4-0 to the visitors.
"We usually get a good crowd for the Peterborough game," said Drury.
"Their fans want to see the new signings they've made and hopefully our fans want to see my new signings.
"This year, we've had a game under our belts which last year we never had.
"Last year we had two training sessions and went straight into the Posh game against 24 full-time pros, which was difficult.
"I think there’s only been one year in the last five that we haven’t played Posh and that was because they went on a pre-season tour.
"We’ve got a great relationship with them and their fans come and watch us when Posh are away, which normally puts another 40-50 on our gate.
"We've always got on well with them. Fergie's always been class, bringing them down, and Barry Fry (director of football), is someone I've known for many, many years.
"I give him a quick call and say, ‘Do you want the friendly again, Baz?’ and usually it’s sorted very early. Kieran Scarff (assistant manager) is very good to us as well.
"They’re really great with us and I appreciate that and Grant McCann is the same at Doncaster."
Drury’s relationship with McCann has gone beyond securing another friendly - it's also led to Stamford signing his son.
Jesse McCann has joined the Daniels’ under-18 set-up after a prolific spell at Deeping Rangers.
"We help each other," said Drury.
"I've known Grant a long time and he gave me a call and asked if there was any chance we could have a look at his lad for our under-18s?
"To be fair, we knew of him and we got him signed up pretty quick.
"He's a good signing for us, he’s a very talented lad.
"He scored 127 goals and had about 50 assists in the last three years at Deeping.
"He's 6ft 1ins, 78kg and built like a man. He turns 16 in September and needs to play under-18s.
"He’s good enough to play that level and I said to Grant if he does well we’ll put him in the reserves for a few men’s games and that’s obviously the next step for him, especially at that size and weight, he can certainly handle himself.
"He puts himself about and we’ve seen him play a few times."
Stamford started their pre-season programme on Saturday with a double-header of friendlies.
They began with a 3-0 away win at United Counties League Premier Division North side Harrowby United.
Lee Shaw, Jordon Cooke and the returning Cameron Johnson netted the goals for the Daniels.
They then travelled to Blackstones where they went down to a 2-1 reversal with one of the five trialists in the Stamford squad scoring their goal.
