Ed Lowe from Stamford is through to the next stage of the Olympic Games in Paris

Elite Stamford cyclist Ed Lowe has taken his first step towards Olympic glory.

Lowe and Great Britain colleagues successfully qualified for the next stage of the men's elite team sprint event on Monday night.

They finished in second place overall behind the Netherlands which gives them a favourable draw for the next stage tonight (Tuesday).

The team will then be aiming to progress through to the finals which get underway later this evening.

Lowe got the team's Olympic campaign underway by riding the first leg of the sprint as they finished in an overall time of 41.862.

The 20-year-old is the second Stamford athlete to compete at a Paris Olympics after Lord David Burghley first raced in the 110m hurdles in 1924.

Lord Burghley went to also compete at both the 1928 and 1932 Olympics, winning gold in the former in the 400m hurdles event.
