Third triumph in four years after battling qualities shine through

The Deepings School Year 10 boys’ football team have been crowned county cup kings for a third time in four years.

Deepings defeated William Farr School 2-1 on Tuesday to regain the Lincolnshire Schools Cup they also won as Year 7 and 8 pupils.

The Under 15s final came a week after Deepings had knocked out cup holders Priory Lincoln after coming from 2-0 down to win 4-3 in extra-time.

They had to demonstrate the same desire and battling qualities in the final in Lincoln as they fell behind in just the third minute after losing possession and conceding a penalty.

William Farr, from Welton, near Lincoln, dominated the first half, having a second goal marginally ruled out for offside and forcing Deepings keeper Max Rigby into two fine blocks.

But Deepings slowly started to get a foothold in the game and the momentum shifted after half-time as they showed the qualities that had carried them to previous successes.

Shortly after having a goal of their own ruled out for offside, centre-forward Beck McCarthy blocked the William Farr keeper’s attempted clearance and slid home the equaliser.

Deepings sensed their opportunity, but were denied a glorious second when Archie Rickards’ 25-yard free-kick rattled the post instead of nestling in the top corner.

However, with 10 minutes left, McCarthy burst through again and when the keeper parried his shot, Rickards was on hand to stroke home the winner and bring the cup back south again.
