Uppingham Town beat FC Khalsa to reach the quarter-finals of the Leicestershire Senior Cup

Uppingham Town needed a couple of slices of good fortune to secure their place in the quarter-finals of the Leicestershire Senior Cup on Saturday.

Town triumphed 2-1 in their second round tie away at Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division side FC Khalsa to book their spot in the last eight.

However, their hosts missed a gilt-edged chance to double their lead in the second half before two errors allowed Town to benefit and return to Rutland triumphant from their trip to Judgemeadow Community College.

Manager Paul Sheehan said: "We were a bit lucky to win the game and, although we didn't play particularly well, we made sure that we stayed in the match.

"We were struggling to get a foothold in the game at 1-0 down but we kept going which I was pleased about and we then took our chances when they came along."

Town had travelled without the services of Callum O'Berg and Ollie Lewin and they fell behind after just 10 minutes.

Khalsa caught their visitors on the break following an Uppingham corner and the ball was well worked with some slick passing out to the left winger who drove home his finish.

The Leicester side continued to dominate possession without really creating any clear-cut chances and Town started to grow into the contest with Rob Forster causing the home defence some problems.

Cam Cleaver fired a shot narrowly wide from the edge of the box on the half-hour mark before Town goalkeeper Tom Hubbard tipped a header to safety on the stroke of the interval.

Khalsa could then have put the contest beyond Uppingham on the hour mark when they worked a good opening to set their striker free but, in a one-on-one with Hubbard, he shot wide.

It was a massive let-off for Town and - boosted by the introduction of Robbie Pearce off the substitutes' bench - they made the most of the reprieve by equalising after 70 minutes.

Cleaver sent over a cross to the back post which was spilled by the home goalkeeper and a grateful Forster pounced to smash home the loose ball.

Town then profited again from some Khalsa generosity with 10 minutes remaining to score what would prove to be the winning goal.

A long clearance forward saw the centre-half and goalkeeper both leave the ball for each other with the defender then hooking it clear at the last minute.

With the goalkeeper now well out of position, Corey Wildman met the clearance with a first-time header from around 30 yards which looped into the Khalsa net at the far post.

Town then defended resolutely to keep their hosts at bay with both Billy Henshaw and Danny Sheehan making vital late blocks to ensure their success.

Town return to Peterborough League action on Saturday when they travel to Deeping Rangers Reserves seeking a seventh successive win in all competitions.
