Stamford Town Cricket Club face Bourne in the final of WAB Midweek League





The final of the Stamford WAB Midweek Cricket League is being held tonight (Friday).

Hosts Stamford take on Bourne in the final of the 16-over competition at their Uffington Road ground (6pm).

It is the culmination of the 10-team round-robin competition that is now in the second year of its running.

Organised by Stamford's Brett Bennett who named the league in memory of his grandfather, Oakham were the inaugural winners last term and again reached the semi-final this season.

However, they were beaten by 22 runs on Tuesday night in their semi-final with Stamford who made 168 after batting first.

Jonny Perring top-scored with 48 while James Ferrow and Aidan Staunton scored 37 and 36 respectively.

Will Begy bagged three wickets for Oakham whose star performer was Devarsh Shah as he claimed three wickets and then scored 44 runs as the Rutland side were restricted to 146-8 in their reply.

Dan Doyle and Sam Clarke both claimed three wickets each to secure Stamford's place in the final of a competition where teams are encouraged to give youngsters a taste of senior cricket.

Bourne beat Castor by 14 runs in the other semi-final with Kurt Storey scoring an unbeaten half-century as they made 141-6.

Ruban Baker then took three wickets as Castor were restricted to 127-6 in their reply.

The other six teams to have taken part in the competition were Barnack, Uffington, Ketton Sports, Burghley Park, Ufford Park and Nassington.
