Jacob Bush secures second spot in the Trofeo Buffoni cycling race in Tuscany, Italy

Baston cyclist Jacob Bush claimed a flurry of accolades when competing in the prestigious Trofeo Buffoni race in Tuscany, Italy.

The 17-year-old finished second overall, and was also named the best young rider (first year junior) and best foreign rider.

He also picked up jerseys for being the King of the Mountain and in the points category at an event which is ranked third behind world tour and pro races on the Union Cycliste Internationale’s list of classifications.

The race was celebrating its 53rd edition, and there were 176 Under 19 riders from 44 teams comprising of four world champions, two European champions, six national champions and six Italian regional champions.

In sunny weather of 28 degrees, the course consisted of four flat loops covering 57km before it ventured into the mountains for a further 78km consisting of six hilly circuits.

The flat loops went as predicted and were fast paced with attacks off the front, but no-one was getting more than 30 seconds advantage.

Bush picked up some sprint points without really meaning to before the real race started on the hilly loop with a sharp right-hander leading into the climb and an epic fight to get to the front at that point.

The climb itself was packed with spectators and wound up through the woods at a steady five-six per cent rate with a great atmosphere and lots of noise.

Bush attacked on lap two of the hilly loop, which those in the team car felt was too early.

However, he stayed at the front as the loops ticked by and was first in a small group of eight and then going solo, getting 20 seconds ahead at one point but never a decisive gap.

With a lap to go, a strong Italian rider bridged the gap to Bush and then counter-attacked.

The Italian - who is now on his way to the World Championships in Australia - eased out to win by 20 seconds, with Bush hanging on for second place, 30 seconds ahead of the next group.
