Stamford Women’s Rugby beat Boston in the final of the Lincolnshire Cup

Stamford Women have completed their second cup double in consecutive seasons.

After winning the Notts, Lincs and Derbys competition last weekend, they beat Boston in the final of the Lincolnshire Cup at Sleaford on Sunday.

While it was not one of the side's stand-out performances of the season, the purple, black and whites did enough to edge a very much improved Boston side 19-17 at the final whistle.

Stamford started off the scoring with an impressive try courtesy of fly half Poppy Murray.

Murray was passed the ball from a ruck 25 metres out from the try line by Daisy Attley and then stepped on the gas.

She proceeded to jink herself through the resolute Boston defence and found herself placing the ball between the posts to put the first points on the scoreboard to which she then converted her own try.

The first half was a hard-fought competition between the two Lincolnshire teams with powerful running and crunching tackles from both sides.

Boston scored the only other points in the half courtesy of a try to bring the opening period to a conclusion with Stamford 7-5 ahead.

The second half continued where the first had finished with both teams playing a very topsy turvy game of dominant moves forward which were stopped by continued hard tackling from the defensive lines.

However, it was Stamford who went further ahead with a try from Brogan Cranfield.

From a penalty on the Boston 22 metre line, the ball was fed to centre and captain Sammy Pocock who surged forward towards the try line.

Pocock was stopped by a Boston tackle just as she was about to place the ball down but managed to see Cranfield charging towards her.

She fed her the ball which was gratefully gathered by Cranfield who then surged over the line to score the try.

After an unconverted Boston try, it was through the skill and sheer guts of Sarah Mitchelson that Stamford were once again troubling the scoreboard.

Mitchelson was passed the ball from debutant Rose Buchanan eight metres out from the Boston try line and managed to impressively weave her way through the defence and placed it proficiently down over the try line.

The try was converted by Attley and the score was 19-10 in Stamford's favour with 10 minutes to go.

However, within two minutes of Stamford scoring, Boston were back on the scoreboard with a very impressive converted try to bring them within two points.

The final eight minutes seemed like an eternity for the Stamford squad and their large group of travelling supporters with play toing and froing between the two rivals.

It wasn't until Stamford gained a penalty on time that the ball was kicked into touch and the celebrations could start for the double cup winning team.
