Deeping United Girls defeat Cleethorpes Town to reach League Cup final

Deeping United Girls Under 11s secured their place in the League Cup final after returning victorious from Saturday’s long trip to play Cleethorpes Town.

Despite the abundant energy within the Deeping squad, it was Cleethorpes whose nerves settled quicker allowing them to take control in the early exchanges of play and they soon found themselves one goal up.

The goal seemed to wake the Deeping side up a little and soon the score was level thanks to a strong Lucy Loades strike.

The lead was short-lived though as the home team increased their pressure on the visitors and added a second to make it 2-1.

Deeping had started to grow into the game now and with added confidence they began to take control of the midfield battle.

Slick passing between Millie Talbot, Bri O’Boyle and Ezmae Clarke saw the visitors find a route to goal for the equaliser just before half-time with Loades again the goalscorer.

It was soon the turn of the Deeping defenders to step up to help keep the score level with joint girl of the game Amelie Hines, Lois George and Emily Stephenson all making strong challenges to deny the Cleethorpes attack.

With the score 2-2 at half time and the Deeping girls growing in confidence the team talk was all about finding the extra one per cent to get the win and take them to the final.

Whatever was said certainly worked as the girls came out with a spring in their step that was missing in the first half.

Within 10 minutes of the restart Deeping and Loades had scored not only their third but also their fourth goal taking the score to 2-4.

Deeping continued to pressure the home defence and were rewarded with their fifth with a stunning left footed strike from the edge of the box by Clarke.

With the game approaching its conclusion, joint girl of the game Loades confirmed Deeping’s victory and passsge to the final with her fifth of the game to take the score to 2-6.

After the game the Deeping coaches had nothing but praise for the girls performance.

They said: “We were so proud of how the girls handled themselves. Any semi-final is nerve-racking but at this age it can overcome a performance.

“The girls showed maturity beyond their years and played at a level that fully deserves a cup final appearance.”
