Wittering Premiair remain top of the Peterborough League Division One table after victory over Warboys Town
Wittering Premiair continue to grind out the results as their impressive start to the new Peterborough League season continued on Saturday.
They defeated Warboys 3-2 to record their seventh successive Division One victory which maintains their place at the top of the table.
Lee Croft netted twice and Ashley Middleton was also on target for the Harriers who were forced to field player-manager Sam Cayley as their stand-in goalkeeper.
Both sides traded possession in a sloppy opening exchange with Warboys probably edging the early duel with a high tempo to their game.
Wittering Premiair made their task a bit harder when a header back to stand-in keeper Cayley was picked off by the Warboys striker who got his first shot away.
It was saved by Cayley but the striker swivelled and on the turn lifted the ball into the empty Harriers net to give Warboys a 10th minute lead.
Wittering Premiair still hadn't heeded the early warnings and Cayley had to make an excellent save down low to his right to prevent Warboys from doubling their advantage.
Harriers then started to settle down after going a goal behind by playing some short football and gaining a lot of composure throughout the team.
A couple of half chances fell to Harriers as the balance of play began to swing in the favour of the side who had been named team of the month for September by the Peterborough League.
They then got back on level terms as a hand-ball on the edge of the Warboys box gave Croft a chance to strike from the resulting free-kick which wrong-footed the goalkeeper who got a faint touch but couldn’t keep the effort out.
This ensured the teams went in at the break on level terms with Wittering Premiair starting to make their presence felt as the game swung in their favour.
The second half started in a similar fashion with a lack of goal threats from Warboys and good game control from Wittering Premiair.
It took 10 minutes for Wittering Premiair to take the lead as, after defending a corner, a long pass from Lee Booker set Andrew Moss away.
Moss raced clear before unselfishly squaring the ball to strike partner Croft who composed himself with a touch before firing into the bottom right hand corner.
Wittering had several other chances and but for the Warboys goalkeeper the game could have been out of sight.
The visitors were being limited to shots from distance and having multiple corners that they couldn’t make the most of.
The next goal was always going to be crucial with both teams pressing in high-tempo game.
Wittering Premiair were the side to take their next chance as Middleton swung in a low corner which took a slight deflection and found its way into the Warboys goal.
Harriers seemed to settle after this with plenty of chances coming their way but they were not able to add to the scoreline.
Warboys scored their second goal of the game with 10 minutes remaining despite Cayley saving a super strike that was heading for the top corner.
Unfortunately for the Wittering Premiair goalkeeper the ball came off both the post and the bar and hit Cayley's foot before trickling into the net.
Despite the goal, Harriers showed terrific character and played out the rest of the game by giving nothing away.
Manager Cayley said: "The boys battled hard in what was a tough game against a very organised Warboys side.
"We started slowly and went 1-0 behind early on. We never really started until Crofty’s free kick which then kick-started us.
"We played some tidy football in spells but failed to really put a stamp on the game.
"Lee Booker was superb at the back and commanded the defence which was much-changed from previous weeks and he didn't lose a header all game.
"However, most importantly though it was another big three points which is all that matters at the moment as, even with a few key lads missing, we got the job done.
"On a side note we would like to thank the Peterborough League for the Division One team on the month award as there are some good sides in this league and it always nice to be recognised."
Wittering Premiair Reserves recorded an excellent 4-0 away win at Holbeach United Sports in their Division Two tussle.
Ben Calvo-Otterwell bagged a brace for the sixth-placed Harriers with James Ould and Aidan Doherty also on target.
The A team went down to a 3-0 home defeat against Division Three leaders Stanground Sports while the B side won 4-0 at Park Farm Pumas Reserves in Division Five.
Jude Bloodworth, Dene Murthwaite, Brandon Williams and Liam Reilly were the marksmen for the Harriers.
