Former Peterborough United, Manchester United, Coventry City, Barnsley and Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Luke Steele signs for Stamford AFC

Stamford have pulled off the eye-catching signing of goalkeeper Luke Steele ahead of Tuesday night's FA Trophy tussle with Kidderminster Harriers.

The former Peterborough United, Manchester United, Coventry City, Barnsley and Nottingham Forest custodian will go straight into the squad for the second round proper tie against the National League high-flyers.

The 36-year-old - who scored a hat-trick while playing as a striker for Peterborough Northern Star Reserves on Saturday - has been recruited following an injury to regular number one Dan Haystead who is sidelined with a knee problem.

Manager Graham Drury was thrilled to sign Steele - who went to school at the Arthur Mellow Village College in Glinton - on a game-by-game basis.

Drury said: "It's an honour to have Luke playing for us, whether it's for one game, two games or 10.

"It just shows what a great character he is to help his local team out.

"I really appreciate Luke doing that. It keeps him ticking over fitness wise and it suits us with Dan Haystead out for a while."

Youngster Max Peverell had deputised for the Daniels on Saturday and kept a clean sheet in their first round victory over Kidsgrove Athletic.

Drury added: "We want to protect Max as best as we can. He built his confidence up really well with his performance on Saturday with a clean sheet.

"He will also learn from Luke and we just feel that sort of experience will really help us.

"It will take a lot of pressure off Max because he's done absolutely superb. He might feel a little bit gutted to not be playing in the game, but we've got to protect him as we see him as a future goalkeeper for Stamford. We have to make sure we do the right thing by him."
