Bourne Deeping Hockey Club round-up

Bourne Deeping extended their winning streak to four games, scoring 19 goals in the process, as they put six past a Cambridge City 4ths side languishing at the bottom of the table.

After a couple of weeks where dodgy finishing almost cost them dearly, the Dragons were less gung-go and their finishing was much more clinical.

Angus Macbeth opened the scoring with a penalty corner dragged low into the bottom corner to give them the perfect start.

Often an early goal has led to frustration if the floodgates don't open straight away, leading to mistakes and surrendering the initiative, but the Dragons were held on a tight leash.

Eventually Collins did set free Chris Burden with a D-to-D overhead which he took down, teasing the keeper before caressing it into the goal for 2-0.

A third before half-time showed the Dragons' luck was in, a deflected Ryan Matthews penalty corner finding the net via a defender's stick.

Thomas Fowkes added a fourth after half-time and, though City responded with a goal of their own, despite forcing Dragons keeper Portlock into a couple of smart saves, it was Kind, Howitt and Burden who had the run of the midfield.

Two smart finishes from Joseph Moisey brought the score to 6-1 at the final whistle.

After a rocky start, the Dragons began to play some really good hockey but, despite lots of shots on target from their forwards and midfielders, they were finding it hard to reach the back of the net.

However, after 18 minutes, Becky Warters ran up the right line and crossed into Alessia Russo standing on the penalty spot for a tap into the goal.

Making some great runs down the wing was Libby Moore, Daisy Hakim, Alessia Russo and Keira Maxey with many crosses into the D.

Dragons came out for the second half with hopes high of scoring more goals but so did Pelicans, starting stronger than the first half.

The Dragons defenders were tasked with a lot of pressure yet Nadine Curtis, Rachel Portlock and Sue Oakley were there to hold off Pelicans as well as some great saves from Eliana Russo in goal.

The Dragons battled on, getting too many short corners to count, with Norah Brill having multiple brilliant strikes at goal but the Pelicans keeper was too strong.

Finally, the chance came on 50 minutes as Alessia Russo went on to score her second goal, increasing the Dragons desire for a vital victory.

Five minutes after, Becky Warters was awarded a short corner and slipped the ball to Carol Murray who was able to strike at goal and score

Nadine Curtis then made a storming goalline save to ensure the clean sheet.
