Stamford Women’s Rugby team beat Kesteven

Stamford Women came away with the bragging rights after an enthralling match up and victory at home against fellow South Lincolnshire rivals Kesteven Ladies.

Stamford were quick out of the traps when Sammy Pocock scored in the corner after just three minutes on the clock.

Stamford piled on the pressure and were rewarded with surely their finest try of the season when Liberty Ashdown was passed the ball just in front of the home try line.

Ashdown then proceeded to weave her way past what appeared to be the whole of the Kesteven line up until she finally found herself over the away team's try line and placed the ball down between the posts. Ashdown converted her own try.

Kesteven found their mojo and started to make forays in to the Stamford half. However, every move forward was met by the resolute and fearsome defence.

Stamford increased their lead with five minutes of the first half remaining when Gemma Alcoran powered past the Kesteven defence line and placed the ball over the line. With Ashdown's conversion, the half-time score was 19-0.

Kesteven started the second half sprightly and were rewarded with a quick try. However, this spurred the home team in to action once again and they furthered increased their lead with tries from Pocock, Emily Russell and a very impressive halfway line run from Kayna Penrose-Toms which resulted in her placing the ball between the posts.

Russell finished the home team's try fest with her second of the match and, with Ashdown scoring four second half conversions, the final score was 47-10 to the purple, black and whites.

Stamford are back in action on Sunday at home in the second round of the RFU Papa John Cup against Bedford Blues.
