Stamford Rugby Club are beaten by Pocklington in the Papa John's Community Cup
Stamford's run in the Papa John's Community Cup was ended by a strong Pocklington side on Saturday.
The Yorkshire visitors recorded a 10-37 success at Hambleton Road and it was widely agreed by the large crowd that this was one of the best teams that Stamford have faced this season.
It was Stamford who applied the early pressure and were rewarded when Harry Bentley stroked over a penalty to put three points on the scoreboard.
The visitors soon got their game together and Stamford were having to defend across the pitch and their sharp passing game resulted in a converted try to give Pocklington a 3-7 lead.
This was soon increased when they converted a penalty and, despite Stamford's efforts, they were unable to keep possession at the vital moments.
Town suffered two injuries with Toby Anderson replacing Harry Bentley and Austin Baker on for Rob Hesford.
A Pocklington attacking move was then stopped when Ed Cox intercepted and ran strongly out of defence but he was tackled and possession was turned over.
The Yorkshire side worked their way up the pitch and from a five-yard line out they drove over for a try to make the score 3-15 at half-time.
The second half saw Pocklington increase their pressure and two quick tries followed.
Stamford defended well and tried to break out but they were unable to beat the well organised visitors' defence.
Pocklington built another move which saw them score out wide out before Stamford hit back when Cox burst through to dot down under the posts for a try which Fuchs converted to move the score to 10-30.
However, it was the visitors who had the last say with a well-worked converted try to close the game at 10-37 and it will be Pocklington that progress to the next round.
They are a well established club from a good rugby area and their traditional attitude to the game was welcomed in the clubhouse afterwards.
