Blackstones beat Bourne Town in the United Counties League

Two goals from Scott Waumsley secured derby delight as Blackstones spoiled Bourne Town's championship party on Easter Monday.

More than 800 supporters turned out at the JJ Mac Stadium to watch the newly-crowned United Counties League Division One title winners take on their play-off chasing neighbours.

And it was Stones who produced the clinical finishes and disciplined display which sent the Wakes to just their second league loss of the season.

Bourne had been crowned champions on Saturday without kicking a ball after title rivals Clipstone were beaten at Leicester St Andrews.

But there was no sign of a hangover from some memorable celebrations on Saturday night as the Wakes started the brighter of the two teams.

They created two excellent chances in the opening exchanges which could have put them in control of the contest.

Will Bird's cushioned lay off created an opening for Zak Allen whose effort was well saved by Blackstones goalkeeper Simon Dalton.

Robbie Ellis then picked out Bird at the back post with a pinpoint cross but the striker was off target with his header which hit the side-netting.

The complexion of the game then changed in the 16th minute as Martin Tudosa won a crunching challenge with Ellis in the centre of park before driving forward and picking out Waumsley who hit home a cultured finish to break the deadlock.

It was the first goal that Bourne had conceded in the last five games and one of home goalkeeper Dan Swan's first touches of the game was to pick the ball out of his net.

He was then facing a similar scenario just before the half-hour mark as a slide-rule pass from former Bourne player Harry Peasgood released Waumsley who slotted home with aplomb past Swan after breaking the home side's offside trap.

Bourne looked for a response and, although they shaded the possession, they struggled to create clear-cut openings.

Richard Jones saw a back post header blocked at close range but Stones were good value for their two-goal interval lead.

Bourne came out for the second half clearly fired up and Dan Wilson's cross just evaded the head of James Hill-Seekings while Allen was unable to make the most of a good position in the penalty area.

Hill-Seekings then headed wide from a Dan Flack cross before another Wilson delivery flicked off the head of Blackstones' Cameron Harris and drifted narrowly wide of the far post.

The marauding Flack then fired a shot against the post after a strong surge into the penalty area with Jamie Short clearing the follow-up off the line.

Stones' determination to protect their lead then saw Kyle Rowell make a brave block from a fierce Flack shot before Dalton again did well to keep out a drive from Allen.

Bourne's frustrations grew as the half wore on and the chances started to dry up as the game entered the latter stages.

Jones hooked a late shot wide as the champions were unable to find a way through as their 12-match winning streak was ended by their derby rivals.

While disappointed not to mark their superb season with a derby win, Bourne can still reflect on a memorable campaign.

The win keeps Stones' play-off hopes alive and they will need to replicate these excellent efforts in the final three games of the season if they are to mount a late charge for a top five finish.
