Peterborough and District Football League round-up
Bourne Town A have opened up a six-point lead at the top of Division Three of the Peterborough League.
They recorded a 2-0 home win against Hampton United on Saturday thanks to goals from Jack Durno and Mike Hasler.
The Wakes went into the game expecting another stern test following last weekend's victory over Netherton A and this turned out to be the case.
The first half was a very open affair and was end-to-end with the midfield of Hampton very lively, making good runs from deep.
The Bourne back four of Jake Dilley, Tom Ward, Liam GIbson and Scott Hardwick had solid games throughout but needed to be at their best during this period and, when called upon, Josh James in the Bourne goal provided robust back up.
On the flip side, some good passing moves from the influential Matthew Bills and Alfie Woodward to the wide areas opened up the Hampton defence.
From one of the moves, Dan Rayner was found in a wide right area, played a great ball into the box for Durno to score his second goal in two matches and put the Wakes ahead.
Another good move resulted in Jake Dilley going on a great run down the right from the full back position.
Dilley’s pass found Hasler, who fed Rayner and the latter sent in a goalbound effort with the Hampton keeper saving well down to his left.
To be fair the half-time scoreline flattered Bourne with some constructive feedback required at half-time.
The Bourne lads responded superbly, keeping a very compact formation for all of the half and subsequently Hampton became very wasteful.
The midfield four of Hasler, Woodward, Bills and Hunt worked tirelessly giving no space to their counterparts.
Hunt and Hasler made good runs in the wide areas with Durno and Rayner supporting with excellent runs off the ball.
From good pressure in the box, a penalty was rewarded with Hasler despatching superbly from the spot.
The introduction of James Hammond, Sam Webster, Ryan Baxter, Tom Middleton and Darren Halliday continued the momentum by providing added energy and enthusiasm.
Special mention to Halliday who didn’t put a foot wrong in centre of defence, sniffing out any isolated Hampton attacks.
Further opportunities followed with the pressure beginning to tell as a left footed free kick from Rayner went narrowly wide.
Overall, based on the second half performance, it was a deserved three points for Bourne who now look forward to what will be a tough league cup quarter-final against Thorney this weekend.
