Stamford Strollers' Over 50s team win Division One of the Peterborough Walking Football League

Stamford Strollers' Over 50s team have won Division One of the Peterborough Walking Football League after the penultimate round of matches.

The A team got off a winning start with a 5-4 success over South Lincs Steelers Blues as they began on the front foot with two early goals from striker Nick Hunter.

This promising start and lead, however, was not to be an enduring one as South Lincs hit back with two goals of their own to even up the scores.

Towards the end of the half, Strollers recaptured the lead with Nick Hunter completing his hat-trick to give the Stamford side a slender half-time advantage.

A change of goalkeeper and two outfield players by Stamford at the break seemed to be causing South Lincs some problems as Strollers went 4-2 up through another brace from Hunter.

However, Steelers were not to be subdued so easily and hit back to reduce the deficit to just one goal from what the Strollers players considered to be a controversial free kick decision.

South Lincs then equalised and threatened to dent Strollers quest for the league title but, with seconds remaining, Iain Ross scored a late winner with a deft shot into the far corner of the Steelers net.

They followed this up with a 2-0 success against Harborough Town Yellows.

Once again, Strollers started the game with authority and a Nick Hunter goal soon gave them the lead.

Strollers were in command and defended comfortably to maintain that lead for the whole of the first half.

A goalkeeper change but no outfield switches second half saw Strollers pushing for a second goal to stretch their slender lead and give them a cushion going into the final stages of the game.

The goal finally came through Chas Walker with a good strike into the bottom corner of the Harborough goal.

Strollers managed to see out the remainder of the game to win with relative ease and secure all three points.

In doing so Strollers secured the title with two games still to play.

Stamford were quickly into their stride in this match-up and dominated possession right from the kick off.

Two early goals from Tim Marsden and two more from Mike Edwards gave Stamford a 4-0 lead at half-time.

Strollers continued their dominance in the second half and half-time replacement Les Woods helped himself to a brace within minutes of coming on.

Mike Edwards finished off the scoring with two more to give Strollers their biggest win of the season.

Stuart Gardner in the Stamford goal pulled off a good save early on to ensure another clean sheet.

The second match of the day resulted in a 4-1 success against Huntingdon A.

Strollers again took the early initative and this time it was Paul Archer who grabbed a couple of goals to give Stamford a 2-0 lead.

Huntingdon pulled a goal back early in the second half, but two long range trademark finishes from Iain Ross gave Strollers a comfortable win.

With two games to play, Stamford B find themselves in third place in Division Two, two points behind Netherton B in second and four points behind Glinton and Northborough who top the league.
