Uppingham Town beat Whittlesey Athletic Reserves in the Peterborough League Premier Division

Uppingham Town ended the 100 per cent home record of Whittlesey Reserves as they opened up a four-point lead at the top of the Peterborough League Premier Division table on Saturday.

Goals from Johan Coughlan and Josh Porter secured a 2-1 away success which allowed Town to increase their advantage over second-placed Warboys.

Town had started quite slowly before being denied an opening goal by a brilliant save from the Whittlesey keeper midway through the first half.

Johan Coughlan, left, was on target for Uppingham.

A good break saw Archie Sootheran release Rob Forster down the wing and his cross picked out Porter whose well-struck shot was superbly kept out.

However, Town did take the lead shortly after as Jordan Neil's corner to the front post was headed home by Porter.

Uppingham began the second half with Coughlan firing into the side-netting after beating his full-back and cutting inside.

The Town teenager then showed quick feet in the box on a loose ball but his shot hit the outside of the post while Forster fired just wide from a tight angle after a great run.

The second goal arrived with 15 minutes remaining as Coughlan was released on the left by Luke Gove and he cut inside the full back before curling his finish into the top corner.

Whittlesey halved the deficit with five minutes remaining when Matt Heron headed home from close range following a corner.

Both sides still had chances to add to their tallies as Town's Sam Eldridge rattled the crossbar with a shot after bursting clear while Heron headed over late on when well-placed as Uppingham returned home with the points.

Boss Paul Sheehan said: "I was really pleased with the result and the performance was so much better than the previous two weeks.

"It took us a little while to get going but, after 20 or 25 minutes, we had control of the game and limited Whittlesey to very few chances.

"In the second half, it was a case of could we get the second goal to help us secure the points and thankfully we did with a great goal by Johan.

"It was a little disappointing we didn't keep the clean sheet we deserved but Whittlesey were a threat all game from set pieces."

Town face another tricky trip on Saturday when they visit fourth-placed Leverington.
