Uppingham celebrate a double win for first time
Uppingham Town’s two senior sides both won for the first time this season showing an impressive turn around at the club.
Uppingham first team finished their match against Leverington Sports in the PDFL Premier with just nine players on the pitch after Mark Dimech and Rob Lawrie were sent off. Although to be more accurate the latter was sent off after the final whistle.
Despite the late reds Town won 5-1 to go 11th in the league.
Martin Bennett struck twice, his second from the penalty spot after Jamie Binley was fouled, and Jordan Neil, Binley and Jack Salt joined him on the scoresheet.
Binley’s strike was the pick of the bunch, an impressive shot from 20 yards.
The Reserves even more impressively turned around a humiliating 19-1 loss at the start of the season away at Tydd St Mary to win 5-4 on their home turf on Saturday.
Back in August they travelled with just nine men which largely contributed to the lopsided scoreline but with just the bare 11 on Saturday they made amends in a performance which made club chairman Richard Kendrick proud.
Uppingham were 3-0 up in the second half but quickly threw away their lead, starting the collapse with an own goal. But they steadied the ship and brought the game back to win late on.
Town’s goalscorers were Omar Elkashoty and Joe Harley, who both grabbed braces and Meredith Maughan-Newby.
James Clayden and Scott Pemberton, (2), scored for the visitors.
Kendrick, who was taking care of the reserve team for the day said: “It was a good day at the club for all involved. It was a fantastic Saturday afternoon.”
Uppingham have a tough trip on Saturday with an away day at fourth place Peterborough ICA Sports on the cards.
However in recent weeks the top sides of the league who have taken Uppingham lightly have done so at their peril, including ICA Sports who lost 3-1 at Tod’s Piece back in January.
