Peterborough and District Football League round-up
Bourne Town A continue to set the pace in Division Three of the Peterborough League after a 4-2 home success over fourth-placed Netherton A on Saturday.
Dan Rayner scored twice for the Wakes with Alfie Woodward and Jack Durno netting their other goals as the Wakes made a winning return after a two-week lay-off following back-to-back postponements.
Netherton came into the match at Elsea Park on a seven-game unbeaten run which made the encounter even more intriguing.
With Bourne narrowly achieving a win in the cup a few weeks back, Netherton were obviously looking to reverse that result.
The opening exchanges provided some neat, crisp passing football from both teams with Netherton's clear game-plan to play off their robust centre forward.
The Wakes showed tenacity and physicality to limit the space of the opposition as both teams represented their clubs with passion, which was great viewing for the superb support on the day.
Ben Asplin in the Bourne goal was in fine form, making some excellent saves to keep his team in the game.
The noticeable one was making himself big when one-on-one with the Netherton striker to produce a superb stop.
However, after some dominant play and a period of good possession, Woodward played an excellent pass down the right to Callum Beveridge.
Beveridge delivered a sublime pass into the Netherton penalty area where Rayner despatched superbly into the goal.
But, not long after taking the lead, a poor clearance from the Bourne defence resulted in a well deserved equaliser as Asplin was given no chance.
Arguably the goal of the game followed as a ball over the top of the Netherton defence found Rayner who volleyed superbly past the visiting goalkeeper for a 2-1 interval lead.
The half-time break brought the introduction of Ethan Hunt for Scott Hardwick and Charlie Coulson for Matt Bills.
Both teams continued the hard work and desire to play good passing football and, from a free-kick to the back post, Netherton got back on equal terms.
The game was now end-to-end as Bourne got back in front as a Rayner shot came off the post and Durno's predatory instincts close in to put the Wakes 3-2 up.
At the other end, a superb long distance effort from Netherton resulted in Asplin making a fantastic save, knocking onto the bar and out of play.
From a strong run down the left, Hunt cut into the box with a last ditch tackle preventing another goal for his team.
The well deserved fourth goal did arrive following good play through the midfield area. Coulson played a sublime forward pass into Woodward who finished spectacularly from an acute angle to seal the win.
There were some outstanding Bourne performances but special mention to Liam GIbson, Tom Ward and Jake Dilley who defended robustly against lively Netherton forwards and started some neat play from the back.
Huge credit to both teams for their hard work and impressive performances on the day.
