Wittering Premiair defeat Long Sutton in the Peterborough League Premier Division
Wittering Premiair ended a tough spell with victory in Saturday's Peterborough League Premier Division clash with Long Sutton at Townsend Road.
After a flying start to the season, the newly-promoted Harriers had found wins hard to come by in recent weeks as they were hit by injuries and player availabilities.
However, they welcomed back a few key players on Saturday at a vital time in the season for what was expected to a tough test against visiting Long Sutton.
The Harriers started well by keeping the ball in key areas of the pitch and having little problem with the Long Sutton attack.
Wittering continued to use the ball well with the Long Sutton keeper making some good saves from Nick Young and Andrew Moss.
The breakthrough came, however, against the run of play when a long ball bounced and home keeper Ben Jex misjudged it allowing Kye Bunce to head past him and put the Magpies ahead.
Wittering looked shocked by this and became very slow and uncertain on the ball and this played into the hands of Long Sutton who sat back and comfortably dealt with the hosts.
Going into the second half Wittering were told to get back to basics and move the ball quicker with more purpose.
And this was rewarded when a ball was switched across the pitch when the Long Sutton keeper fumbled allowing new winger Ashton Bennett-Williams to notch his first goal for the club after showing great persistence.
Wittering stepped up a notch and had a lot of possession, however, it was a long ball which undid the Long Sutton back line which Moss found himself on the end of.
The Harriers striker placed the ball over the top of the Long Sutton keeper for a gazelle-like Grant Tippett to bundle it into the net after sprinting the length of the pitch.
The game was seen out well by the home side but the away team continued to battle hard until the final whistle.
Harriers boss Sam Cayley said: "It was a good result and one which we needed.
"It's been a tough few weeks on and off the pitch so it was nice to have a few players back which allowed us to be able to use the subs when needed.
"Long Sutton were a good, well organised side and when we went behind they were difficult to break down.
"Credit has to go to the boys as we really dug in. There was nothing pretty about the win but it's another three points on the board.
"We now move onto another tough game this weekend against a good Crowland side which is never an easy place to go."
