Fairport Convention play in Spalding this Saturday (May 11)

Music icons Fairport Convention are set to rock Spalding this Saturday, playing at the South Holland Centre, writes Patrick Walsh.

With a number of popular hits such as ‘Who Knows Where The Time Goes?’, ‘Matty Groves’ and ‘Fotheringay’, the London five piece are credited with the creation of British folk-rock music.

Originating from North London around 1967, Fairport Convention derived their name from founding member ,and rhythm guitarist, Simon Nicol’s family home of ‘Fairport’ where the band rehearsed.

Since then, the band has progressed through various line-up changes and have recorded a huge number of albums. They’ve even founded their very own annual music festival named ‘Fairport’s Cropredy Convention’ which will be returning once again this year in August.

This year, the festival will host big names such as Frank Turner, Richard Digance, The Waterboys and Richard Thompson

In their fifty years of writing and touring, the band have won the BBC Lifetime Achievement Award, had a major documentary on BBC Four and their fantastic album ‘Liege & Leaf’ has been voted by BBC Radio 2 listeners as ‘The Most Influential Folk Album of All Time’.

The band have worked with music legends throughout their time, from Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson to Ashley Hutchings and Judy Dyble.

This concert is part of a 30 date long spring tour that will take the band all over the UK.

‘Impressive musicians with a great back catalogue...’ says the Guardian.

Last year, Fairport released their live album ‘What We Did On Our Saturday’ from their 50th anniversary concert at Cropredy Festival 2018. It features their current line-up of Simon Nicol (guitar and vocals), Dave Pegg (bass), Ric Sanders (violin), Chris Leslie (mandolin and fiddle) and Gerry Conway (drums).

The concert starts at 8pm on Saturday (May 11), at the South Holland Centre. Tickets cost £24, available from 01775 764777.
