Inley Drove Farm will be opened to the public by Francis Pryor as part of the National Open Garden Scheme

Archaeologist Francis Pryor will be opening his garden to the public.

Inley Drove Farm in Sutton St James is taking part in the National Open Garden scheme, which aims to give visitors unique access to over 3,500 private gardens in England and Wales.

On Saturday and Sunday, September 25 and 26, visitors will be able to admire more than three acres of garden and meadows - as well as a six and a half acre woodland area.

Admission is just £4.50, with children allowed in for free.

Margaret Mann, publicity officer for the scheme, said: “People pay to have access to the gardens, and we raise lots of money for charity.

“Nationally, we make about £3million a year for caring charities like Marie Curie and Macmillan Cancer.

“It’s not just any old garden, either. They’re very very good gardens that have a certain standard.

“Usually when the gardens open, we have tea and cakes and so on.

“It’s been going since 1929.”

With the Garden Scheme events returning but those at the largest venues were cancelled during the pandemic, Margaret is excited to get things back up and running.

“It’s different this year because people can actually pre-book online,” she said.

“They can go to the National Garden Scheme website to do that. Or they can just turn up at the gate.

“So you can wait until the day to see what the weather is like.

“This will be one of the last events because gardens will start winding down for the winter.

“It will start again next February and March.

“Lots of people actually do go to the events, but of course we’re very much dependent.”

The garden at Inley Drove Farm is designed to improve colour, scent and wildlife in the area.

There are double-mixed borders and less formal flower gardens, all of which are framed by hornbeam hedges. There are plenty of woodland walks available, and an orchard is a must-visit.
