Grantham Singers return with Gilbert and Sullivan work

The Grantham Singers return to the stage with a Gilbert and Sullivan work.

The singers will present a semi-concerted version of The Sorcerer on Friday and Saturday, February 27 and 28 at the Guildhall Arts Centre.

This comic operetta tells the story of Alexis (a young man hopelessly in love with the beautiful Aline) who is obsessed with the theory of true happiness being found in marriage alone.

To promote his beliefs, he invites John Wellington Wells, a sorcerer, to brew a love potion and distribute it amongst the villagers. This causes everyone in the village to fall in love with the first person they see and results in the comic pairing of many mismatched couples!

However, through the effect of the love potion, Aline falls in love with Dr Daly (the village vicar) and Alexis is left heartbroken. How can the spell be broken to allow everyone to return to their former loves?

Featuring well-known songs including Now to the Banquet we press, Oh! Happy Young Heart and My name is John Wellington Wells, this is an evening not to be missed.

The Grantham Singers are one of the town’s oldest performing societies and celebrated their 60th anniversary in 2013 with a NODA award-winning production.

They currently have about 40 members ranging in age from 16 to 70+ and rehearse weekly from September to March under the guidance of Musical Director Elaine Bishop.

The Sorcerer was the first full-length collaboration between W.S. Gilbert and Sir A. Sullivan following the success of their one-act show Trial by Jury. Although only a modest success at the time, it was successful enough to pave the way for their next production – HMS Pinafore.
