Sutton Bridge history book launch this weekend
Long Sutton and District Civic Society is publishing its latest local history, with a launch planned to coincide with its Heritage Open Days event on Saturday.
Whilst the Society’s popular ‘History of Long Sutton’ by local authors Frank and Bruce Robinson has run to two revisions, this will be the first comprehensive history of Sutton Bridge it has published.
Society spokesman Tim Machin said: "Sutton Bridge has a short but fascinating history. It started life as a few properties on the outskirts of Long Sutton a little over 200 years ago, celebrates its 190th birthday this year since it was named and became independent of its neighbour about 10 years later.
"Since then it has seen a major growth in population and trade and for a while was one of the most important transport hubs in the east of England. Our new book reveals the key stages in the village's growth, the local families who made it happen, stories of heroism, hope, tragedy and day to day life of the community."
The Society is launching the book at its open exhibition of some of Sutton Bridge’s hidden stories on Saturday at the Curlew Centre, 10am to 5pm.
The book, which is over 140 pages, includes many historic photographs and is priced at £10.
