Kids break free and go gaga in Bourne Corn Exchange
Youngsters from Bourne Abbey Primary School took over market day in Thursday to launch a new Rock You Theatre School (RYTS) in the town.
The pupils staged a flashmob to music by Queen outside the Corn Exchange to promote a theatre week at Bourne Abbey from August 11 to 14, between 10am and 2pm.
Andrew Clingo, founder of RYTS, said: “I started teaching at the school in October and one of the things I had to do was the Year 6 leavers’ production.
“As it was my first one and the headteacher’s (Cherry Edwards) last, I wanted to do something with a bit of a wow factor.
“So I thought of We Will Rock You and the kids who did it showed a real enthusiasm for theatre.
“Now we’re doing a summer school and then a theatre school on Saturdays from September 12.
The best thing about RYTS is the confidence, self-esteem and life skills that the kids learn, but in a very fun and creative way
“The important thing is that kids don’t have to attend Bourne Abbey to join RYTS as long as they are in Years 5 to 9.”
The flashmob was the idea of Sarah Baker whose daughter Olivia was part of the Year 6 leavers’ production which led to the launch of RYTS.
Sarah said: “Olivia has become more confident since having a part in We Will Rock You and she’s quite happy to sing in front of people.
“All the kids took to it so well and it’s amazing to see them put on a fantastic show when they are only ten and 11 years old.
“It’s also good because they are going to different schools in September, so RYTS is just another way of keeping them together for a bit longer.”
