Dobbies, in Boston, offers free potato growing workshops for all ages and abilities

A garden centre is encouraging people to give growing a go at its free workshop open to all ages and abilities.

Dobbies, in Boston, is offering the chance to learn more about a vegetable, which has been crowned the UK’s most popular by YouGov - the potato.

In a 15-minute interactive how-to session, the store’s horticultural experts will give a potato planting demonstration while sharing advice on crop care and gardening tips to ensure a successful potato harvest.

This will be held at 10:30am on Saturday, February 3 with a separate children’s workshop to take place on the Sunday morning as part of Dobbies’ Little Seedlings Club – designed to educate and inspire the next generation of gardeners.

Dobbies’ plant buyer Nigel Lawton said: “From Maris Piper to Potato Charlotte, there is a wide variety of potatoes to choose from that you can grow for yourself at home.

“All you need is a potato sack or tub, filled with a quarter of good quality peat-free compost, three seed potatoes evenly spaced on top of the soil covered with another layer of compost and then water regularly to keep the compost moist.

“Your potatoes will be ready to be harvested in as little as 12 weeks.”

Another activities taking place is a workshop centered around Random Acts of Kindness, a day which encourages people to go above and beyond to brighten someone’s day. Children will have the chance to create their own sunshine thank you card, make a bug hotel or plant pollinating flowers to help bumblebees.

Bookings for the workshop and the store’s other free events can be made here. Events are also taking place at the Peterborough branch of Dobbies.
