Spalding Gentlemen’s Society lecture on the 'long 18th Century'
The Spalding Gentlemen’s Society lecture on Friday will chart a political course through the constitutional ‘long 18th Century’; the Glorious Revolution 1688 to the Great Reform Act of 1832.
Jasper Jennings is a dealer, author and lecturer and his talk will consider the surprising and intriguing stories to be found behind antiquarian prints.
The ‘long eighteenth century’ in Britain is used by many historians to cover a more natural historical period than a calendar definition.
During this period, the legitimacy of monarchical and aristocratic power structures had been seriously challenged.
The Industrial Revolution had begun in Britain, bringing radical changes in human society and the environment.
The Representation of the People Act 1832, known as the Great Reform Act, included the extension of franchise to smaller property owners and to householders in the boroughs, although it formally excluded women from voting, identifying a voter as a male person.
SGS lectures are open to all and start at 7.30pm, with an admission fee of £3 on entry. The lecture will be held at the Methodist Church in Broad Street, Spalding.
SGS ask that only people who are fully vaccinated or have a recent clear Covid test should attend. Face masks or a visor are encouraged if possible.
Lectures are also via live stream on Microsoft Teams which must be booked and £3 paid in advance through Art Tickets: spalding-gentlemens-society.arttickets.org.uk
