Long-serving Spalding Shipwreck Society holds its annual dinner
The historic Spalding Shipwreck Society holds its 175th AGM next Thursday.
Dating back to 1844, the society was founded in the days when Spalding was “quite a large port”, explains its president David Turner.
"It led from High Bridge, all the way out to sea," he said. "You can still see the old foundations of the warehouses.”
The organisation, also known as the Spalding Society of Mutual Relief in Case of Shipwreck, supports benefit members who have worked at sea, and their widows.
The AGM at Spalding Golf Club on April 25, will include a sausage and mash supper. It starts at 7pm for 7.30pm.
"My great grandfather was a sea captain and one of the last harbour masters," David added.
By the middle of the 19th century, up to 500 loaded vessels annually made their way up and down the River Welland as the town's business flourished.
