MUSIC REVIEW: Aussie sisters taking back control in order to impress on Little Mix tour
Three sisters from South Australia, Georgia, Ella and Clara Germein, aim to expand their European fan base by supporting Little Mix's stadium tour this month.
Simply called Germein, the Adelaide-based trio have undergone a musical rebranding with what Georgia described as an effort to "capture that live sound" which has led to them being compared to American sisters Haim, Canadian sisters Tegan and Sara, The Bangles and Irish folk rock group The Corrs.
But "Talking", a single recorded by Germein in their own home-based studio, is far more of a nod to Texas as the sisters combine their soft harmonies with an edgy electric guitar played by Ella.
Georgia, on lead guitar, keyboard and lead vocals, is the main songwriter for the group, while Clara beats out the rhythms as Germein's drummer.
Having set out on the road to stardom in 2012, Germein have built a healthy clientele of supporters in Australia, as well as Germany and Switzerland where they play regularly.
Ahead of the sisters supporting Little Mix at Lincolnshire Showground tomorrow (Friday) night, Georgia said: "I wrote 'Talking' when I didn't feel like talking to anyone.
"It's a bit of a darker song and it's one that people can relate to if they're having problems in their relationships.
"The song is a statement for us being in the music industry as we recorded it in our studio at home where we wanted to capture that live sound, with the freedom do it how we wanted to."
Georgia released a solo album, "Take My Hand", in 2010 before the sisters combined to record "Because You Breather three years later, an album produced by Billy Farrell who helped catapult both The Corrs and Westlife to the top of the album charts.
“As siblings, we’ve been playing together for so long that the band had become second nature to us,” Georgia said.
"It's a team effort, but being the lead singer means there's this pressure on me for things to go well.
"We love playing in Australia but we're keen to be based on this side of the world where the main music market is where the touring lifestyle makes more sense because the populations area bit closer."
Songs such as "Da Da Doo, Golden, It's A Shame and Move On" firmly belong in the realm of the first incarnation when the trio performed as Germein Sisters.
But "Talking" is being promoted as "the first taste of a new Germein...mixing their close, three-part harmonies with a soaring break-out chorus".
Georgia said: "When we started out, we played in local pubs in our home town just for fun and not so much as a job.
"But it feels like things have changed in the last few years as there are a lot more stronger female role models out there.
“We realised that it was time to take control for ourselves and really start making the music that we want to make on our own terms.
"We hit play on ‘Talking’ and knew it was the musical vision we’ve had for ourselves finally coming to life.”
After several visits to the Isle of Wight Festival, Germein were invited to support Little Mix at their "Summer Shout Out Shows" in September 2017.
Georgia said: "We were amazed to be able to open for Little Mix last year but to be asked back to the tour with them in 2018 is a whole new experience for us.
"We're still pretty new to the UK so it's great to be doing a full tour here and we're getting a really fantastic reception.
"The tour has been quite surreal as well because it's our first set of stadium shows and there a few people who are singing along to our songs.
"We're grateful to be looked upon as female role models and to be around at a time where it's becoming more normal to be young women in the music industry.
"Now we just want to keep the momentum going because we have some new songs coming out at the end of this tour."
