The Mousetrap, by Agatha Christie, returns to Nottingham Theatre Royal at start of 70th anniversary tour




The longest running play in the world marks kicks off its 70th anniversary tour next week ­— right back where it all began in Nottingham.

Agatha Christie’s iconic thriller The Mousetrap is returning to the Theatre Royal, where it premiered in October 1952. It runs from Tuesday until Saturday, October 1.

It tells a tale of seven guests snowed in at a remote countryside guesthouse ­— only to discover that a murderer is in their midst.

The suspicious characters reveal their sordid pasts as they seek to discover which of them is the murderer, and who will be their next victim.

The opening show of the 70th anniversary tour stars EastEnders actor Todd Carty as Major Metcalf, Gwyneth Strong ­— of Only Fools and Horses and EastEnders ­— as Mrs Boyle, fellow EastEnders actor John Altman as Mr Paravicini, Joelle Dyson of Dreamgirls as Mollie Ralston, Laurence Pears as Giles Ralston, Joseph Reed as Detective Sgt. Trotter and The Moustrap’s London cast members Elliot Clay as Chr.istopher Wren and Essie Barrow as Miss Casewell.

Peter Ireson, venue director for the Theatre Royal, said: “We are very proud of our venue’s historic association with Agatha Christie.

"For her to have considered the Theatre Royal a ‘lucky theatre’ in which to premiere her new plays is such an accolade, and that certainly proved to be true for The Mousetrap.

“I am sure there will be some tingles up the spine on the opening night of this anniversary tour, knowing that the great woman herself sat in this very auditorium in Nottingham, seeing the play for the very first time seventy years ago.”

Following its 1952 premiere touring production, The Mousetrap opened in the West End where still to this day, it continues its record-breaking engagement at the St Martin’s Theatre having been performed there over 28,500 times, selling over 10 million tickets.

The anniversary opens in Nottingham before visiting more than 70 theatres throughout the UK and Ireland.
