The Greatest Showman: This is the real story, as told by best-selling author, lecturer and retired detective Trevor Marriott
If you haven’t yet seen the blockbuster movie The Greatest Showman, you’ll have no doubt seen clips from it, or at least have heard parts of the soundtrack.
And for those who don’t already know, P. T. Barnum (the man the movie was based on) was, of course, a real person.
Playing upon the public’s interest in the unusual and bizarre, Barnum scoured the world for curiosities, living or dead, genuine or fake. By means of outrageous stunts, repetitive advertising, and exaggerated publicity, Barnum excited international attention.
Now, best-selling author, lecturer and retired murder squad detective, Trevor Marriott, plans to tell the truth about the famous man.
He kicks off his tour ‘P.T. Barnum - The Greatest Showman - The Untold Story’ at Peterborough’s Key Theatre on Wednesday, February 5, at 7.30pm.
“It opens as a comparison between P.T. Barnum and Hugh Jackman,” Mr Marriott explains.
“They were incomparable really,” he adds, referring to the difference in looks between the two.
And Mr Marriott reveals that P.T. Barnum did not actually go into the circus as we know it, until he was aged in his 60s.
“After the popularity of the film and the stage musical before that, with Michael Crawford playing Barnum, I thought I would show the real facts.”
In his audio-visual show presentation, Mr Marriott will take the audience on a historical and nostalgic trip to the times the circus came to town.
For the younger generation it is a chance to learn about the ‘magic’ of the circus of days gone by.
Mr Marriott, from Bedford, has also written extensively about the Jack the Ripper cases, other crimes and books based on detective Sherlock Holmes.
He also lectures on cruise ships, and has spoken on Cunard, Fred Olsen, Celebrity and Princess Cruises.
Tickets for the presentation, P.T. Barnum - The Untold Story, are on sale at £15.50 per person.
