A weekly column by Jan Whitbourn of Tulip Events Management

This coming Saturday (September 22), will see the Pride in South Holland Awards.

We will hear from the sponsors who have been visiting many community groups and public events to see why these people have been nominated for their categories this year.

They will be telling us why they feel the winners have won their award and about their hard work.

The sponsors have seen so many volunteers and the good work they do in our community.

They feel that through the message of community cohesion, the hard work of volunteers and the overwhelming importance of structured and entertaining activities in our districts, we have become stronger.

We, as a community, carry the responsibility of educating the next generation - not only academically as our fantastic schools do this - but education in their social responsibility to the community in which they live, respect for authority and most importantly, team work.

I asked Harry Drury, vice chairman of the South Holland District Council and proud sponsor of the sports category, his thoughts on the event itself.

Harry said: "There are few better places than to improve these skills than through sport. With the additional health benefit, this is the main reason for my support to the award of 'Community Sports Group’ and the event shows this in many ways."

We as a district needed to honour and recognise the hours of tireless but rewarding voluntary efforts put into South Holland for providing the opportunity to our community and those with a broad range of abilities.

They are the real heroes who often carry on with little recognition. We all know who portrays these qualities and deserve a big thank you.

We need to encourage our volunteers to keep up the good work they do to maintain what they do, which also helps to keep us motivated to reach many goals for our future.

All the people who have been shortlisted have been notified and should make sure they pick up their tickets from the South Holland Centre by Friday 21.
