The Snowman set to fly in to Lincoln Cathedral this Christmas
Summer may only just be coming to an end, but Lincoln Cathedral is already looking ahead to its Christmas entertainment.
It is planning its much-loved annual screening of the BAFTA-winning animation The Snowman.
Performances will take place on Saturday, December 10, when the festive classic will be shown on a big screen in the nave, accompanied by a live orchestra and soloists from the cathedral choir.
There are five performances at 11am, 1.30pm, 3pm, 7pm and 8.30pm.
The Snowman has become an integral part of many families’ Christmas since the picture book by Raymond Briggs was first published in 1978.
The animated version was first broadcast on Channel 4 in 1982 and has been shown every year since.
It will have a particular poignancy this year following the death in August of its author and illustrator, Raymond Briggs, at the age of 88.
In keeping with the book, the film of The Snowman is wordless and free of dialogue, except for the now iconic, Walking In the Air, which will be performed by a chorister at each performance.
It will be accompanied by a live orchestra who will bring the score to life and make the most of the incredible acoustics of the cathedral.
The nave will be lit to create a magical atmosphere ensuring an unforgettable experience for adults and children alike.
