Spalding St Nicolas Players putting on new show - and you can win tickets
Spooky goings on at Spalding Services and Social Club on High Street don’t end with the Halloween disco this year.
November 4, 5 and 6 sees St Nicolas Players present a seasonal ghostly treat with their play ‘Spirit Level’, a supernatural comedy by Pam Valentine.
And we have teamed up with the Players to offer six pairs of tickets in a Guardian competition.
‘Spirit Level’ has an ever-bickering ghostly married couple evoke the strange power of their even stranger Guardian Angel to come to the aid of a cash-strapped young couple who have rented their former cottage and are expecting their first baby at Christmas.
A terrified local estate agent is desperate to hide the numerous strange occurrences from the newly-weds, and the bride’s mother is determined to split them up, so she can marry off her daughter to someone she considers more suitable.
This is the first time that the Services and Social Club has hosted a play, and the new club committee is determined to see whether regular theatre nights can be a success alongside its already well-attended event schedule, which normally ranges from bingo and tribute bands through to burlesque shows.
Martin Tyrrell, director of Spirit Level, said: “The club has gone out of its way to make us feel welcome, particularly as we couldn’t perform at all for the last two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the refurbishment of the South Holland Centre. Spirit Level is a wonderful play with a Christmassy ending, perfect for the time of year, and we’re looking forward to putting it on for both club members and the general public in November.”
Spalding Services and Social Club is getting back to normal after the enforced closure, and offers its members a public bar, as well as snooker, darts, pool and a popular bingo night.
“We hope that the play will offer an affordable and accessible way to bring live theatre to people who may not be your idea of a traditional play-goer,” added Martin.
“We’re offering discounted tickets for club members, as well as giving non-members a chance to see the excellent facilities on offer at the club.”
Tickets are £9 (£7.50 concessions) and are available from behind the bar at the club, or from Bookmark in The Crescent, or by telephoning 01775 711744.
Instead of the normal theatre rows, seats are arranged ‘cabaret-style’, in groups of six around a small table, and guests are welcome to bring snacks and nibbles. A full bar will be open at the interval for liquid refreshments. Performances start at 7:30pm.
To enter our competition, answer the following question: Which local theatre company is putting on Spirit Level?
Email your answer to jeremy.ransome@iliffepublishing.co.uk, writing SPIRIT LEVEL COMPETITION in the subject line, and giving your name, address, telephone number and email address. Please state which performance you would like to attend.
Competition entry deadline is 5pm on Wednesday, October 13.
