Spalding councillors speak out after two ‘shocking’ suspected murders in their ward in 15 days

Councillors are ‘united in ensuring their town remains safe’ after two potential murders in their ward in the space of 15 days.

A man was arrested on suspicion of murder on Tuesday evening (November 26) following the discovery of a woman’s body on Winsover Road in Spalding.

This comes just days after two men were arrested following the death of 45-year-old Vadims Zmicerevskis on the neighbouring junction of Green Lane and St Thomas’ Road on November 11.

Viktors Zeglovs, 33, of no fixed abode, was charged with the murder of Mr Zmicerevskis while a 47-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of affray has been bailed pending further investigations.

Both deaths occurred in the Spalding St John’s Ward, represented by Coun Manzur Hasan and Coun James Le Sage, the latter of whom has now called for a greater police presence in the town.

“As a local councillor, I am deeply saddened by the tragic events that have occurred on Winsover Road, Spalding,” Coun Hasan said.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim during this unimaginably difficult time.

“This marks the second devastating incident in Spalding within a month, highlighting a concerning shift in the safety and character of our community.

“Spalding has always been a place of unity and resilience, and I remain committed to working with residents and local authorities to restore this sense of security.”

Coun Hasan added: “I would like to reassure everyone that our local authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to uncover the facts and ensure justice is served.

For those who feel unsettled by these events, please reach out to the Neighbourhood Policing Team or community support services for assistance .

“We stand united in ensuring Spalding remains a safe and caring place for all.”

Coun Le Sage echoed Coun Hasan’s sentiments.

He said: “It’s very, very sad. Our thoughts have to be with the family of the deceased first and foremost.

“It’s very sad we’ve had two serious incidents resulting in deaths in the ward and an indictment of the times we live in and the general decline of social standards in the UK.

“It’s shocking we’ve had two incidents in a matter of weeks.”

Coun Le Sage urged anyone who feels in danger in any aspect of their life to seek appropriate help from the authorities.

“I think Spalding is a safe place, in general. These are isolated incidents,” he added, before calling for a greater police presence in town.

“But what is desperately needed is more visible policing round the town. There doesn’t seem to be a great deal of visible presence in terms of foot patrols walking round the town to give people it is a safe place to be.”
