Spalding based Christmas obsessed couple prepare to switch on ‘bigger and better’ display of more than 80,000 lights
A Christmas-obsessed couple who transform their home with more than 80,000 lights will be going bigger and better for this year’s display.
Steve Marriot, 64, and his partner Cath Cole, have been lighting up their Spalding street to celebrate the festive period since lockdown.
The couple, who live at 4 Farthingales, wanted to spread joy to passers-by during the tough time – however, Steve, who has always had an interest in lights, now describes it as a bit of an obsession.
He said: “During lockdown I put up a Christmas display and everyone who walked past was smiling – it was just a bit of fun at the time.
“The following year it all got a bit out of hand.
“As restrictions were lifted and children were allowed back to school, many would stop outside the house and stare in awe of the lights, which was brilliant to see.
“It then became a bit of an obsession and this year will be the biggest display we have ever had. There are 80,000 plus lights on the house now – it’s got a bit ridiculous.”
Last year the couple started collecting donations and raised £250 for the air ambulance charity and this year’s illuminations will start on Saturday, November 30, until January 5.
For many people, the Christmas period is celebrated throughout December however, Steve starts preparing for the next display each February.
He added: “It’s an all year round thing for me. I make every single light that is on the house and some of them are made with my 3D printer. I programme it along with music and the display runs from 3.15pm until 9.30pm every day.
“I don’t know how much it costs but the cost is irrelevant to me because of the enjoyment that it brings people – but we have got a smart meter this year.
“I will keep doing it until I can’t get on the garage roof to do it anymore. At this moment in time I can see it going on for a few years.”

Cath also likes to get involved with the impressive display – but prefers to start in August as she believes that is a more acceptable time to talk about Christmas.
She added: “I do enjoy it and it is good fun – it’s a big thing for us. I do draw the line at playing Christmas music in the house during August and September, and I tell Steve – ‘If you’re going to be programming in here, put your headphones on darling!’.
“Steve has always been somebody who loves Christmas time. He’s a laid back, happy person and he’s all about making other people happy.”
This year visitors can donate through a go fund me page. Alternatively Cath and Steve will be taking cash donations as well.
