Fans of Star Wars, Doctor Who, Deadpool & Wolverine, wrestling and gaming in for a treat at Spalding Comicon this weekend

If you’ve ever wanted to rub shoulders with stars of Doctor Who and Star Wars, watch a Deadpool & Wolverine actor wrestle live or escape from the jaws of a famous movie shark then Spalding Comicon could be just the thing for you.

The hotly-anticipated Spalding Comicon event will take place this weekend, with retro gaming, trade stands, cosplay and a movie night with the Gremlins also among the attractions.

Organisers Adam and Mel Landy - who were behind last year’s popular Sutton Bridge Comicon - are using the event as a fundraiser for Lincolnshire’s the Pilgrim School, which provides education to pupils who are not able to access their mainstream school due to illness.

“We’re incredibly proud of the line-up and we’re just hoping we can raise plenty of money for The Pilgrim School,” Adam said.

“That’s our main focus, helping those kids out.

“Fingers crossed everyone has a good day. We want to give local families and kids a great day out.”

This year’s event has a real Doctor Who theme with stars Colin Baker, Sophie Aldred and Nicola Bryant all in attendance.

There will also be props including Daleks, Cyber men and a TARDIS while the public will also bring their own Whovian flavour to the event.

“One person said they’re coming in cosplay as the TARDIS, which I’m looking forward to seeing,” Adam added.

“There’s a lot of people interested in Doctor Who, and we’ve got the props there.

“Interestingly, a few locals have asked if they can bring their remote control Daleks with them, so there’s a lot of interest.”

Wrestlers from local promotion Falling Starr will be putting on bouts throughout the day.

Among the grapplers featuring will be The Bull, Mike Waters who recently played The Blob in the Deadpool & Wolverine movie.

Other attractions include the chance to have your photo taken in the mouth of a mock-up prop of movie shark Jaws and alongside Gremlins in the cinema, plus trade stands and crazy cosplayers mingling with the crowds.

There will also free retro gaming area.

“It’s important we do stuff like that,” Adam added.

“I was really keen to have things that are free to engage with throughout the day. Having a young family and going to these events, often you pay to get in and you’re then relentlessly spending money throughout the day.

“We want to give people things to do that are part of the ticket price. We hope they spend money with the really great traders, but we want to keep people active throughout the day.”

A special treat for Star Wars fans will be Ross Sambridge who played Supreme Leader Snoke and an actor who portrayed the suited Kylo Ren, both from the recent Star Wars movies.

Also listed among the guests will be Hattie Hayridge, who played HOLLY on Red Dwarf, Ross Mullan who played a whitewalker on Game of Thrones and Craig David Dowsett and Kelly Rian Sanson, who starred in the cult Winnie The Pooh: Blood and Honey series.

Fans will be coming from as far away as Wales to the Springfields Exhibition Centre on Saturday (September 7).

Tickets are currently on sale via www.spaldingcomi.com, with prices set to rise on the day.
