‘I feel like the town is a long way behind everywhere else’ New Spalding business calls for wheelie bin decision to be made

A man who is hoping to start a wheelie bin cleaning business is urging council bosses to get on and make a decision on introducing them in its district — and says he already been overloaded with interest.

Earlier this year, South Holland District Council received more than 8,000 responses to a survey, which asked residents if they want to make the switch from bags to wheelie bins.

The survey closed in August and, while a decision has not yet been made, Spalding’s Danny Coupland has already spotting a business opportunity.

The 43-year-old pitched his idea on a Spalding Facebook group and has since been overwhelmed with messages.

He said: “I have had so many people messaging me who are interested in it. It’s a full time job to just keep up with the messages.

“After visiting an area which already had wheelie bins, it made me think that there must be a market for keeping them clean because they do get smelly and carry germs and bacteria.

“I am keen on keeping the area clean and pest free. The amount of times I get up and see that my bin bags outside the house have been ripped by animals or even humans – it’s not great.

“When the bin men come and collect bags, there is sometimes left over rubbish which has fallen out. I see rats and rodents trotting about when I take my dog for walks, which the bin bag situation can’t be helping.

“I feel like the town is a long way behind everywhere else and it must work for other places because if it didn’t, why would they all do it.”

Following a surge in interest from the social media post, Danny has had feedback from people in Bourne, the Deepings, Langtoft and Morton — based on their experiences with bins.

The Wheelie Clean Bin Company would deploy a specialist machine to thoroughly clean and disinfect outside rubbish and garden waste bins.

Danny added: “If the bins don’t come to Spalding, I feel like I’ve got a good opportunity with business from people in the surrounding areas anyway.

“Being from the area, I would like to support the town and it would be good if wheelie bins did come here.

“I’d love it to become a full time business and it will be family run – once I get my flyers sorted I’ll be sending my kids out to put them through peoples doors.

“You’re not allowed to use pressure washers anymore so I’ve bought all the machines and gear, got my licence, business name and I’m fully registered, so fingers crossed it all goes alright – I’m confident wheelie bins will come to Spalding.”

The business would charge £4 for one bin, £7 for two bins on the same visit and £10 for three.

South Holland District Council has told this newspaper that a decision is due on whether to ditch bags in favour of bins by the end of the year.
