South Holland District Council leader Nick Worth reveals the results of the wheelie bin consultation
A district-wide consultation on the future of refuse services has resulted in a ‘minor victory for black bags’.
South Holland District Council leader Nick Worth last night (Wednesday, October 2) revealed the results of the recent consultation on whether to replace the existing green and black bags with wheelie bins - ahead of the introduction of food caddies in 2026.
The survey received a total of 8,576 responses with 49% in favour of wheelie bins while 51% wanted to retain the bags.
Coun Worth said: “Although it is a minor victory for black bags, the result is effectively split.”
The meeting was told that officers are now putting together a report featuring six or seven costing options which could look at a mixture of bags and bins.
Coun Worth said that report will be discussed at cabinet which is likely to come before November’s full council meeting.
Spalding’s Danny Coupland had called on the council to make a decision as he is launching a wheelie bin cleaning business. Coun Worth addressed by stating that changes won’t happen until March 2026.
He said: “The reason for that is we need a long leading time as every council in the country is having to purchase new vehicles for food waste.”
