Public consultation launched on University Academy Long Sutton redevelopment proposals

A public consultation is being launched on major plans to redevelop a secondary school.

University Academy Long Sutton is one of the 61 schools to be selected to be part of the Government’s flagship School Rebuilding Programme and now things are progressing with the project, which was announced in 2022.

It is hoped that work could start on the scheme in the the late summer or autumn if the planning application is approved in July.

Bowmer + Kirkland, a Derbyshire construction company, has been awarded the contract by the Department for Education (DfE) to construct the new facilities in Long Sutton and it will be holding a public consultation on Monday, March 4, from 5pm in the school library.

A press release states: “A key objective for the project is to support pupils’ development by including the provision of ICT-rich classrooms. Additionally, the existing utilities infrastructure, identified as outdated by initial surveys, will be replaced to create a Net Zero Carbon in Operation (NZCiO) block and modernise facilities for students.

“The new school proposals target the primary infrastructure concerns raised in initial surveys, by replacing infrastructure that is past its useful economic life, creating classrooms that are more temperature efficient and raising the finished floor levels to mitigate water ingress in certain areas of the school.

“Additionally, the proposals include improved car parking for staff and visitors together with new dedicated parking spaces for school buses.

“The layout of the school will provide students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) additional space in the purpose-designed SEND area to allow them to obtain the extra support they require and maximise their educational potential.”

The school was chosen to be part of the Government’s 10-year School Rebuilding Programme (SRP), a programme designed to upgrade school buildings across England that are considered to be in the worst condition.

A meeting will be held at the school library on Monday, March 4, from 4pm - 5pm for school staff, parents and pupils to have their say on the proposals.

While residents, stakeholders and councillors will be able to go along from 5pm to 7pm to comment.

Representatives from both Bowmer + Kirkland and Planning and Development consultant Dobson-Grey will be in attendance to present the proposed scheme.

The release states: “This is an opportunity for residents of the community and parents of students to attend and share their thoughts in advance of the formal planning submission. There is also a website to enable interested parties to view the proposals and share their initial thoughts. Please visit www.universityacademylongsutton.co.uk
