Donington councillor is urging people to put on their winter coats before walking their dog in today’s heatwave

A councillor is urging pet owners who are considering walking their dogs in the heat to put on their winter coats as they exercise their animals.

With temperatures set to rise to 30C today (Friday, June 20), Donington councillor Jane King is asking dog owners to think twice before taking their pets out into the sun.

Hot weather is dangerous for dogs who can suffer heat stroke along with burns to their paws.

Coun King, who sits on South Holland District and Lincolnshire County Councils, has put out the appeal after seeing a number of dog owners walking their pets during the hottest part of the day recently.

She said: “If you intend to walk your dog in the middle of the day or when it is really hot, please put on your winter coats and boots. Please do that - and then you will know how your dog feels.

“Dogs can get heat stroke and their feet can get badly burned. In the past I came across one dog whose paws were so badly burned that it looked like he had walked on hot coals. He hadn’t - he had just been out for a walk in the hot weather.

“Please take them out first thing in the morning and last thing at night. A dog won’t die from not having a walk but it can die from having a walk in the heat.

“Whether it’s a big dog, little dog, hairy dog - walking in this weather is not good for them.”

Dog owners are urged to check the heat of pavements before taking their dog out. You can do this by placing your hand or foot on the pavement for five seconds.
