Spalding Water Taxi will not be operating this summer due to low levels of River Welland

Spalding Water Taxi will not be operating this summer due to the low river levels.

Broadgate Homes and South Holland District Council, who are joint partners in the ‘not for profit’ Spalding service, say it is a ‘huge disappointment’ but the River Welland does not have enough depth for safe passage following the Cowbit and Crowland Washes breach.

The Environment Agency is undertaking repairs to the bank on the outskirts of Crowland which breached in January as a result of Storm Henk. River water has been flowing through the hole onto nearby farm land.

Simon Clarke, of Broadgate Homes, said: “It was a huge disappointment that the water taxi will not be able to operate it’s award-winning service for the local community and visitors this season, however safety of our passengers and crew is paramount.

“Areas along the route between the town centre and Springfields does not have enough depth to allow safe passage and with no set date for completion of the engineering works to the riverbank we have had to make this difficult decision.

“We are sorry for any inconvenience and look forward to welcoming all our loyal customers and many new ones on board next year.”
