‘We’re confident goals have been achieved!’ Multi-million-pound work to widen A16 Springfields Roundabout in Spalding completed after 14 months
Multi-million-pound work to widen a busy A16 roundabout has been completed after 14 months, with a highways chief saying he is ‘confident goals have been achieved’.
The new-look Springfields Roundabout at Spalding is now fully functional after more than a year of labour on the site, which is part of a £20 million improvement project for this stretch of road.
"After 14 months of hard work, I’m happy to announce that our improvements to the A16/A151 Springfield Roundabout are officially finished, with the upgraded roundabout fully re-opened,” said Coun Richard Davies, Lincolnshire County Council’s executive member for highways.
"This major project aims to ease congestion, enhance safety, and future-proof the roundabout for upcoming A16 upgrades.
“By making the roundabout bigger; adding new entry and exit lanes on the A16; and improving entry and exit lanes on the A151, we’re confident these goals have been achieved.”
Work began last September and was due to take 12 months to complete.
However, poor weather conditions extended the timescale.
“I know the disruption during the works didn’t make life easy for drivers, residents, or local businesses so I want to give my sincere thanks to everyone for bearing with us throughout the works,” Coun Davies added.
“Traffic management is necessary evil of all roadworks to help keep everyone, including our workforce, safe.”
The project was part of a £20 million Government-funded Levelling Up project on the A16 which has also seen works completed at Boston’s Marsh Lane Roundabout.
A widening project at Pinchbeck’s Greencell Roundabout is still ongoing.
"With Springfields Roundabout back open, we’re now focused on completing our improvements to Pinchbeck Roundabout, just a mile up the A16," Coun Davies added.
“This project has been a very complex piece of engineering to make into a reality. In fact, over 65,000 hours were spent on it since breaking ground last September and it’s involved installing over a half mile of new underground drainage and using over 12,500 tonnes of materials to rebuild the roundabout.”
Below are some additional facts and figures about the Springfields Roundabout project:
* 8,000 tonnes of old carriageway, footway and kerbing was excavated.
* More than a mile and a half of new kerbing was installed.
* Eight new street lighting columns were installed.
* Six new road crossings were built.
* Nearly half a mile of new footway was built.
