Work starts to repair traffic lights around Spalding High Bridge
Work is due to begin to repair town centre traffic lights which have been out of action for weeks following a crash.
Temporary traffic lights have been creating misery for motorists trying to negotiate Spalding’s High Bridge over the last few weeks.
The traffic lights on Bridge Street, High Street, Church Street and Churchgate have been out of action since their controller was damaged in a crash on June 1.
Lincolnshire County Council had previously warned that the repairs could take ‘considerably longer than normal’ due to the need for a structural survey to assess the condition of the wall after the collision.
But now the county council has agreed to start work and hope the lights will be working by the end of the week.
Jonathan Evans, head of highways client at the county council, said: "We have decided to pre-empt the structural survey and crack on with replacing the signal equipment because we can't have these delays continuing whist we wait for owner of the building to resolve the wall issues.
"We are going in today to start installing the new controller and to replace all of the signal heads because these will operate at a different voltage on the new control system. We are hopeful that this will all be complete by the end of this week.
"We have been in contact with the owner of the building, but we do not feel like we can wait any longer.
“If the building owner needs us to remove the new controller in the future to facilitate the wall repair, we will work with them to minimise disruption and plan the future works accordingly. If this were to happen, we will look to recover the additional costs associated with this revisit from the party that caused the original damage.”
