Reaction from Spalding United manager Jimmy Dean after their victory over Banbury United

Manager Jimmy Dean is proud of the efforts of his revitalised Spalding United side.

Dean took over a Tulips team that had lost four of their opening five games after winning promotion to the Southern League Premier Division Central.

However, two months into his tenure, Spalding have now won four of their last five league games following a 2-0 home win over Banbury United on Saturday.

It propelled the Tulips up into 14th place and Dean was full of praise for the efforts of his players since taking over the Spalding helm.

He said: "I probably haven't done it enough because a lot of these boys were playing under a manager that they were very close to.

"It's been a big culture switch. We've started training twice a week and I'm very different to what they've been used to.

"The boys deserve an awful lot of credit for what they've done over the last couple of months.

"The difference between where we were and where we are now is night and day. It's been a big turnaround.

"Proud is probably thrown away a bit too much at times in football but, to go from where we were to where we are now, I'm proud to be associated with them because of what they have given me."

A first half goal from Bart Cybulski had put Spalding ahead against a Banbury side who were playing in the National League North last season.

Despite the second half dismissal of Lamine Sherif, Spalding produced a disciplined display before netting a second goal in injury-time through Maniche Sani.

Dean added: "I thought it was a very dogged performance.

"I felt most of the attacking moments came from us and the first goal came at a good time.

"We weren't too troubled after that and, even when we went down to 10 men, we adjusted well and the players worked so hard.

"It was a good afternoon against a good side who had only conceded six goals in the league before Saturday.

"We've put on 25 percent of their conceded record after 12 games.

"We did think that the first goal would be really important because they are a resolute side.

"We looked after the game then and tinkered with our engagement line and kept the distances tight across the pitch."

Spalding are back in league action on Tuesday night when they welcome Leiston to the Sir Halley Stewart ground.
