Negative comments fuel Surfleet home owners to pull out all the stops to celebrate Halloween

Owners of a popular Halloween house are pulling out all the stops for this year’s display — and say previous negative comments have only made them even more determined to go bigger and better.

Following the success of last year’s spooky transformation, Joe Chapman and Anna Lucyna’s home in Surfleet is sporting a spooky vibe again — with giant inflatables and eye-catching homemade decorations catching the eye of passersby.

Anna said: “The past couple of years we decided to go bigger and better because the kids love it. Last year we had people drive more than 30 miles to visit the house.

“I made 120 goodie bags for trick or treaters on Halloween night, and we ran out within half an hour.

“We did receive some negative comments last year but we were adamant to do it again - bigger and better. If it makes the kids happy, that’s all that matters – we don’t care what anybody else thinks.”

If you are brave enough to visit the Surfleet Road home this year make sure to be on your best behaviour, as Frankenstein will be keeping an eyes on visitors from the roof. Some of the other new additions include an interactive Halloween train, a 14ft clown and 20ft pumpkin stack.

Anna added: “The reaction we get is what I love the most. There are at least five or six cars who pull every night to take photos. Lorry drivers who drive past, show their families photos and their kids always want to come trick or treating here.”

While plans are already being made for this year’s Christmas decorations – including a giant inflatable snowman — Joe and Anna are focused on welcoming trick or treaters on October 31 before the yuletide preparations begin.
