The Ukulele Orchestra of Spalding encourages new members to join its weekly group

Newcomers are being encouraged to join a group of musicians who play an instrument best associated with comic entertainer George Formby.

The Ukulele Orchestra of Spalding is a friendly club that has been running for 16 years and attracts from 25-40 players who meet on a weekly basis.

In his day George Formby was a highly paid performer who played the ukulele with classics such as When I’m Cleaning Windows.

“Newcomers are always welcome and it is like a big family.”

The orchestra will be celebrating its 16th birthday in August and last year celebrated with a Ukes Got Talent contest.

Members have performed at the South Holland Centre and at the Key Theatre in Peterborough in the past.

They also perform church concerts and have donated funds to Lincs & Notts Air Ambulances to the tune of £500.

The group has also raised funds for a charity that supports people with dementia.

Those who are interested can attend from Thursday, July 24 at Broad Street Methodist Church at 7.30pm.
