“It is causing chaos and it’s causing big problems for us,” he said.

“It’s definitely affecting our business, we can’t reach our customers in the same time.

“Our taxi drivers can’t earn the same money as one jobs are taking them a long time to get there.

“It’s affecting our business big time with the customer service, people who are going to work or school transport.”

Commercial Road was recently shut for the third time in as many months by Anglian Water to repair a burst main.

This has already caused havoc in the town, with issues exacerbated by temporary traffic lights on Surfleet Road at Pinchbeck to allow construction to aid a new housing estate.

Work on the A16 at the Greencell roundabout and also at Surfleet are also among the major projects causing problems, along with a series of smaller jobs, around the area.

While many motorists in the area are seeing time stuck in traffic added to their daily journeys, this situation can be twice as bad for cabbies who often need to make return journeys ready for their next jobs.

Royal Taxis are among the fleets who help transport youngsters in need of specialist education to their chosen schools.

Mr Choudry says delayed or re-routed journeys have an effect on the mental health of some youngsters who rely on routines in their lives, as well as their families.

“It is also a frustration for parents as they’ve got to get to work, and we can’t get to them at the regular time,” he added.

George Scott, chairman of the Spalding and Peterborough Transport Forum, says the work on Commercial Road caused a serious knock-on effect around town.

“It’s one of the busiest roads in town and indeed out of town,” he said.

“It’s causing congestion all over the place, unfortunately.

“You get up to the bridge and then find out its closed. I don’t think many people down that road are happy about it.

“Unless you go round the outside of town, you can’t get out. It’s going to end up with lorries trying to get down residential roads.”
